The vapor barrier’s job is to prevent warm and moist indoor air from infiltrating fiber-type insulation during cold weather. The lower temperatures can cause this warm and moist air to condense and negatively affect the insulation. If you spot visible moisture on the inside of a vapor barrier, then this moisture is probably caused by leaks. Vapor barriers do not trap moisture.
Roofs are likely to have air leaks that can cause internal condensation during winter. Stuffing batts between the rafters in a cathedral ceiling and then covering them with vapor barrier is not a good idea because there will be no place for condensation to escape. As an experienced roofing company, we suggest that cathedral ceilings insulated with batts should have an open vent space from eaves to peak in order to prevent this problem.
It’s simplistic to think that all spray foam insulation is bad. Back in the 1970s, people used urea formaldehyde spray foam to insulate their homes. This was because the authorities didn’t understand the dangers of using this kind of insulation. Fortunately, today’s insulation doesn’t have the same problems. Properly applied spray foam is safe and it is outstanding at air sealing.
